Why This Matters

Teen girls are experiencing record-high levels of sadness, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. They need safe, consistent support and practical skills—not judgment.

U.S. HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS:

52.6% reported persistent sadness/hopelessness; 27.1% seriously considered suicide; 12.6% attempted suicide (past 12 months). (CDC)

FLORIDA (HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS, 2021 YRBS FLORIDA):

52% felt sad/hopeless; 24% seriously considered suicide; 11% attempted suicide.

FLORIDA SUICIDE DEATH RATE (AGES 15–19):

8.1 per 100,000 in 2021 (state report using FL DOH Vital Statistics). (MyFLFamilies)

TREATMENT GAP (U.S., AGES 12–17 WITH MAJOR DEPRESSION):

About 40% did not receive treatment in the past year. (SAMHSA)

PLACEMENT INSTABILITY & RUNNING AWAY (RISK IS HIGHER FOR GIRLS):

In a multi-state analysis, girls were more likely to run away from foster care than boys (gender difference consistently noted). (The Center for State Child Welfare Data)

MENTAL HEALTH + OPIOID MISUSE CONNECTION IN TEENS (SUPPORTS INTEGRATED CARE)

Adolescents (12–17) with a major depressive episode had higher opioid misuse (3.5%) than those without (1.9%) in 2023. (SAMHSA)
